To gain site access, make sure all team members register with the APS as far in advance of your initial visit as possible.
Members who are not U.S. citizens must allow additional time for approval.Beginning February 2006, all foreign national visitors and new foreign national employees, upon their initial visit to Argonne, will be required to show proof that they are legally in-status by presenting their INS documentation at the AIC before an employee badge or visitor gate pass will be issued. Please advise your guests of ANL's new policy so that they are prepared to produce their passport along with their visa, or other applicable documentation such as their I-94, I-20, DS-2019, EAD, etc.
APS Registration Form
Information for Non-U.S. Citizens
The APS Experiment Safety Approval Form (ESAF) and SBC Hazard Assessment Form must be completed and submitted to the SBC User Office at least two weeks before your group's visit. It is essential that all experimenters contribute to the completion of the form. Failure to provide accurate or complete information may result in a cancellation or delay in the start of your experiments.

APS Experimental Safety Approval Form
The APS Experiment Safety Approval Form (ESAF) should be submitted online.
Be sure to have your GUP # ready as it will be needed for entry. You are required to include all team members who will be participating in your experiment on the ESAF form.
Additionally you are required:
1. You are required to provide the full names of all macromolecular crystal samples, salts, solutions (ie. TGF2 = Tumor Growth Factor 2).
2. If you require or prefer this information to be kept confidential please check confidential box at the end of line.
3. Include all the experimenters who will be coming to the SBC on the ESAF form

SBC Hazard Assessment Form view files
Completion of the Hazard Assessment form includes providing information about how you will transport samples, chemicals, and solutions to Argonne.

The following address can be used for shipping non-hazardous samples and crystals shipped in a dry shipper.
Shipping of Non-Hazardous Materials
Shipping dewars containers of liquid nitrogen or crystals frozen in propane, freon, or ethane are consider hazardous shipments.
The shipment of all samples, chemicals, dewars, etc. must abide with all DOT and IATA regulations, the failure to do so may result in a delay or loss of your shipment along with possible fines. Argonne National Laboratory has obtained a letter of competent authority from the US DOT for the legal shipment via air transport of macromolecules frozen in propane, freon, and other flammable and nonflammable gases when packaged in a dry shipper. Please refer to APS Technical Update (TUD-25).
Shipping of Hazardous Materials
Transport (including hand carried packages) of all hazardous materials to Argonne should conform with applicable regulations of the U. S. Department of Transportation. We call your attention to regulation 49 CFR 173.4 that has only minimal requirements for shipping small quantities of hazardous materials. Please refer to APS Technical Update (TUD-23).
Your university or institute’s shipping department should be able to provide further assistance on outgoing shipments.

Additional Information
1.
Staffing
Bring enough team members to fully utilize the beamline 24 hours a day. The APS requires all users to dress appropriately when in the experimental hall. This includes: closed toe, covered heal shoes and long pants. Sandals are not allowed and skirts may be worn with a lab coat.
2.
Legal Issues
Make sure each team member is covered by a User Agreement between his or her home institution and the APS.
3.
Money
Establish a user account to pay for supplies, shipping, services, proprietary time, etc.
4.
Lodging
Book onsite lodging directly with the Argonne Guest House. If you choose to stay offsite, you will need a car.
5.
Training
Complete all required training before beginning hands-on work at the APS. The User Office will contact you to schedule initial training as part of the registration process. You can read these study guides online in advance to save time when you arrive.
6.
Feedback
After your visit, complete an End of Experiment Form to give us feedback about your experience.
7.
Publications
- Acknowledge the use of the Structural Biology Center at the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory when publishing results of research conducted at the APS. Include appropriate acknowledgments of the resources provided by the beamline staff, affiliated institutions, and funding agencies.
- Report all publications resulting from work at the SBC/APS to: Michelle Ficner-Radford – mficner@anl.gov.
- Contribute summaries of your work at the SBC/APS to the periodic APS User Activity Reports.
